On November 1st, 2019, a young mom and her two children moved into a beautiful little 2-bedroom 2-bath laneway home. This was the culmination of Aunt Leah’s Foundation’s first construction project. It was the second laneway house built in New Westminster under its recently adopted bylaw, and to our knowledge the first in the Province that was built to fulfill a social purpose. The project was a pleasure to carry out. Development assistance and construction services were provided by the PD Moore Homes Inc. team. The knowledge and experience they brought to the table were real factors in making it such a pleasure. They worked very well with our in-house team, bringing a positive attitude, and reinforcing the excitement we all had. They fit really well within the positive relationship we have with the City Planning and Development people, and were readily available when we needed explanations and suggestions. They were also able to connect us with suppliers who were prepared to provide materials and fixtures at no cost, in recognition of our charitable status. The project was completed on time, on budget. In 2021/22 we will be tearing down the first house that Aunt Leah’s acquired in 1986, and that has been operated as a group home for young moms and babies in need of shelter since that time. It will be replaced with a beautiful new group home, with comfortable modern amenities. We will be talking with the folks at PD Moore Homes, and circumstances allowing, will be really pleased to have them on board once again.
